Air Duct Cleaning: What a Visit Involves and When It's Worth It
A step-by-step look at a duct cleaning visit, plus the situations where it makes the most sense.

Most people never see inside their air ducts. They're behind the walls, under the floors and above the ceilings, moving air from the furnace or air conditioner to every room. Because you can't see them, it's hard to know whether cleaning them is a real need or just something a salesperson talks you into.
Here's what a visit actually looks like when we do it, and how to judge whether your home is due.
Step one: the assessment
We start with a look at the whole system: the furnace or air handler, the supply ducts that push air into your rooms, and the return ducts that pull it back. We check the condition of the system and the amount of dust and debris built up inside. This is the point where we can tell you honestly whether cleaning is worth doing, and what it would involve in your house.
Step two: preparing the home
Next, the registers come off. Those are the vent covers in your floors, walls and ceilings. Removing them gives us direct access to the ducts, and it lets us clean the registers and grilles themselves instead of leaving a dusty cover on a clean duct.
Step three: extraction
This is the main event. We use HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment to pull dust, debris and loose contaminants out of the supply and return ducts. A HEPA filter on the vacuum matters because it captures the fine particles instead of blowing them back into your living space.
Step four: optional antimicrobial treatment
If it makes sense for your home, we can finish with an antimicrobial treatment inside the ducts. It's optional. We'll explain it during the assessment, and you decide whether you want it.
Before and after photos
We take before and after photos of the work, so you can see exactly what came out of your system instead of taking our word for it. One customer, sschierling, described a visit to a place they'd just moved into this way: "They spent so much time and were so thorough with everything." Photos are part of why you can trust that sentence. If we say the ducts needed cleaning, you can see it.
How long does it take?
A typical home takes about two to four hours. Bigger homes, systems with many branches and ducts with heavy buildup take longer. You don't need to do much beforehand, other than making sure we can reach the registers and the furnace area.
When is it worth doing?
As a general guide, cleaning your ducts every three to five years is reasonable. Some homes should go sooner. Consider an earlier visit if any of these sound like your house:
- You have pets. Hair and dander travel through the ducts like they do through the rest of the house.
- Someone in the home has allergies. Cleaning removes dust, allergens and pet dander that collect in the system.
- You've done a renovation. Construction dust gets into the ducts easily, even with the vents covered.
- You've just moved into a home and don't know when the ducts were last cleaned, if ever.
- You see excessive dust. If you wipe the shelves on Sunday and they're dusty again by Wednesday, the air is carrying something.
- You notice a musty smell when the heat or air conditioning kicks on.
When it probably isn't needed yet
If your home is a few years old, nobody smokes inside, there are no pets, and you change the furnace filter on schedule, your ducts may be fine for a while. Changing the filter regularly is the cheapest thing you can do to keep a system clean. A filter that's clogged forces dust around it and into the ducts.
What you'll notice afterward
Less dust settling on surfaces is the first change most people see. Rooms can smell fresher, especially if musty air was the problem. A system with clean ducts doesn't have to work as hard to push air, which supports the furnace and air conditioner over the long run. We can't promise a specific change in your energy bill, because every house is different, but clean ducts do help the system move air the way it was designed to.
