How Often Should You Clean Carpets With Pets and Kids?

Ask ten people how often carpet should be cleaned and you'll get ten answers, usually based on when they last felt guilty about it. There's a better way to decide, and it starts with how many feet, paws and spilled juice boxes cross your floors in a week.

Here's the schedule we give our customers across Northern Colorado, and the reasoning behind it.

The baseline: every 12 to 18 months

For most households, cleaning the carpets every 12 to 18 months keeps them in good shape. That's a home with a couple of adults, normal foot traffic, shoes mostly left at the door, and no animals shedding on the living room rug.

Carpet fibers act like a filter. Dust, grit, skin cells and everything tracked in from outside settle into the pile and stay there. Vacuuming pulls up the loose surface dirt, but the fine soil works its way down to the base of the fibers, where a vacuum can't reach. Hot water extraction flushes that out. Waiting too long doesn't just leave the carpet looking dull. Grit grinds against the fibers every time someone walks across, and that wears the carpet down faster.

With pets, kids or heavy traffic: every 6 to 12 months

Homes with pets, children or a lot of daily traffic benefit from cleaning every 6 to 12 months. If you've got two dogs and three kids, plan on the short end of that range. If you've got one cat and a quiet house, the longer end is probably fine.

Here's what changes when you add a family or an animal:

  • Pet dander and hair. Both settle deep into carpet, and a regular vacuum doesn't get all of it. Professional cleaning removes dirt, allergens and pet dander.
  • Odors. Pet accidents, wet paws and the general smell of a lived-in house build up in the pile. Cleaning deodorizes at the source instead of covering it.
  • Spills and spots. Kids and spills go together. Juice, milk, mud and crayon all leave marks, and the longer they sit, the harder they are to lift.
  • Traffic lanes. Hallways, stair landings and the path from the kitchen to the couch take the worst of it. Those lanes darken first, and they're the first thing a guest notices.

Signs your carpet is overdue

A calendar is a decent guide, but your carpet will tell you when it needs help. Look for these:

  • Dark lanes where people walk, with cleaner-looking carpet along the edges and under furniture.
  • A musty or stale smell, especially on a warm day or right after someone vacuums.
  • Carpet that feels rough or flat, instead of soft and springy.
  • Stains that came back after you cleaned them. Often the spot was never fully removed, and the soil underneath wicked up to the surface again.

Between professional cleanings

You can stretch the time between visits with a few habits. None of these replace a deep cleaning, but they help.

  • Vacuum high-traffic areas a few times a week, and the rest of the house weekly. Slow passes pick up more than fast ones.
  • Put a mat at every door and ask people to take off their shoes. This single habit keeps a surprising amount of dirt off your floors.
  • Blot spills right away with a clean white cloth. Press and lift, don't rub. Rubbing pushes the spill deeper and fuzzes up the fibers.
  • Brush or groom pets regularly, ideally outside, so less hair ends up in the carpet.
  • Move furniture a few inches now and then so the same spots don't take all the wear.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

This is the question parents and pet owners ask us first. We use eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning solutions that are safe for your whole family, including children and pets. Once the carpets are dry, they're completely safe to walk on. In the meantime, keep little ones and animals off the carpet while it's damp, so they don't track anything through it and don't get a damp, chilly floor.

If you have a pet that has had accidents in the same area, tell us when you book. It changes how we pre-treat that spot, and we can give you an honest answer about what to expect.

Setting a rhythm that works

Many households pick a time of year and stick to it. Some clean in spring after the mud season, some clean in early fall before the holidays and the long stretch indoors. Homes with heavier use often do both. A reminder on your phone beats trying to remember when the last cleaning happened.

One of our customers put it this way in a review: "M and J is the best! M&J cleaned my carpets in 2008. M&J is who cleans my carpet in 2025." That's John Hageseth, and it's the kind of long relationship we like. A regular schedule makes each visit easier, because the carpet never gets so far gone that it needs a rescue.
